| IRS opening some offices this Saturday
Some local Internal Revenue Service offices will stay open this Saturday to help lower-income Washington residents who want the recently approved economic stimulus payment, commonly referred to as a rebate. The payments, due to start arriving in early May, will typically range from $300 to $600 for individuals, and from $600 to $1,200 for joint filers. The IRS offices will be open mainly to help the state's 380,000 residents who don't normally file income-tax returns because they're not required to, said IRS spokeswoman Judy Monahan. Those include people living on Social Security or disability payments and those with less than $3,000 in annual qualifying income. "These people aren't used to filling out those forms, so the idea is to make it as easy as possible for them," Monahan said.
TAXES
Many small business owners live in fear of an audit by the IRS, but the reality is that relatively few will ever have to go through an exhaustive examination of their books, invoices and receipts. What's more likely is that they'll catch the notice of IRS employees with omissions or mistakes – or by claiming too much for deductions such as entertainment or home office expenses. "If your arithmetic is wrong, or your calculations are wrong, those are the types of things that create inconsistencies and often create exams that you don't need," said Steve Hurok, tax director in the Woodbridge, N.J., office of the accounting firm BDO Seidman LLP. The IRS doesn't have enough staff to do a high number of full-blown audits. It's much more likely you'll get a letter from the IRS questioning an item on a tax return.
IRS Offers Help To Seek Tax Rebates
The Internal Revenue Service is offering help to everyone eligible for a tax rebate check. According to the IRS, Many people who qualify for the rebate don't regularly file a federal tax return because they don't make enough money -- but to get a check, you have to file a return. The IRS will open 320 locations across the country this weekend to help people who are only filing to get their refund check. About two dozen locations will open on Saturday throughout Connecticut.
